Recapping the Year

As I sip my cocoa and huddle under my favorite blanket, I'm thinking about the things I am proudest of this year.  In no particular order:

My 31 Days Project.  This was by far my best showing as a blogger, and I thank all of you that followed and encouraged my progress.  I didn't blog every day, but I came darn close.  Also I made a new graphic all by myself!

After a fun summer of camping and attending day camp for a whole week, I became my younger son's scout leader.  I was a little afraid at first, but quickly I was surrounded by the support of my cubmaster, the other den leaders and the parents.  I never realized how awesome it would be to share my passion for the outdoors, as well as my intention to not raise my sons to be nincompoops, with these bright little boys.  It's amazing and I feel I'm in my zone.

I joined the gym and have been going almost every day, mostly with my friend Erin.  It is so nice to have someone to work out with, and to go junking with, and we even got her and her husband to go camping with us.  In fact, this has been an amazing year for hanging out with old friends and making new ones too.  I spent some time in Kentucky with my friend Lisa and her parents.  And I've spent a lot of time with my friend Brittany, who reads this blog and never comments, ha ha.  So many friends, I could go on all day!  I'm so lucky!

I got to watch my kid win the "World Series."  Amazing season, with great coaching.

I turned 40, and visited the Appalachian Trail.  Next time I plan to stay a bit longer.

My little brother married a real sweet girl. And my baby boy got to be the ring bearer!

Finally, I've met so many nice bloggers this year! I will be updating my sidebar very soon to add in all these great ladies I've been reading, and I do hope you'll swing by and give a holler!

Wishing you a happy, healthy and fantastic 2013!!!

Plans change

We had reserved a cabin in the woods for this weekend.
A little bit of Thoreau for the holidays.
Nature had a different plan,
Dumping a half foot of snow on us.
So we are finding stuff to do closer to home.

Time to refresh

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season! We're having a lot of fun with the snow and being home together. I'm hoping to ramp up a few things for the blog in the new year. I do hope you'll visit again!

A simpler Christmastime

The boys are playing and creating.
They even got out the old Thomas trains.
I am hanging with a friend and my husband.
This morning I played marbles with Nathan.
And the other night we played Monopoly till the bitter end.
I didn't stress out over Pinterest ideas
Or getting it all perfect this year.
We started the morning reading from Luke.
King James, of course, because he angels got to say "hark!"
In a while we will have family over and have food and gifts.
Simple food and drink. Simple fun.
I wish you all a very happy celebration!

As if on cue we got a few pretty inches of snow today. We spent most of the day at home, eating and watching Christmas movies. Still I can't shake the feeling I need to be doing more. Really I'm trying to relax a bit. Enjoy the solstice. Posted by the lights of the Christmas tree.

Getting a little jolly

I made these for my son's first grade class today.
His teacher saw it on Pinterest.
What the heck?
I recommend a lemon water bath for the fruit
As well as making them as last minute as possible.
Thank heavens for kids.
They make everything better.

Trying to figure it all out

Like everyone, I'm in a funk.
Trying to make sense of the senseless.
Hoping that tomorrow can feel a little normal.
Love to all, that's all we can do, I guess.

Thrifted Thursday

I haven't been thrifting much, but I had some time to kill yesterday morning and couldn't resist.
I get a little guilty being so close to Christmas and all.
My husband always asks what I'd like for gifts, and would never get it if I asked for granny plates.

A little craft space joy

Getting organized and beautified inspires me to do a little gift wrapping and scrapping in this gloomy Sunday. That and my husband whisking our offspring away for the day. Hurray for feeling better!!!

Sick day

The sore throat and chills are kicking in.
I am pretty much here for the duration.
No sense in fretting, really.
I'll just enjoy my tree, under my favorite blanket
And a little Christmas music for this cold rainy day.

The season has begun

Our humongous extended family Christmas party was yesterday.
We love to congregate, to just see everyone.
A long table loaded with covered dishes.
A ballroom filled with cousins and aunts and uncles.
(And lucky we are to have a cousin with a ballroom!)
I'm so glad my boys have this chance to know their tribe.

A little Wordsworth for your Friday

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. --Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreath├Ęd horn.

---William Wordsworth 1802

This sums up a lot for me lately.

The hangout

Our house is becoming the neighborhood hangout after school.
The boys come screeching home, asking if so and so can come for a while.
They mostly play ball in the backyard.
The cooler temps have brought them in.
I'm glad they have nice friends.
I don't really mind at all.

Finally a little fun.
After a brief bought of croup we made it outside today.
Mexican at our favorite, Casa, and an evening walk at a state park.
We saw so many deer, leaping in the brush.

A surprise

We woke up this morning to find that the boys had hauled up the Christmas tree from the basement. They were busily trying to put it together, but had the poke upside down and the branches scattered everywhere! It was a fun morning, getting all the decorations out, and Ken made cocoa. A wonderful and thoughtful surprise.

Thankful: Saturday

Health. Wellness. Absence of illness.
Today Zack is well, better at least.
Husband is home. I can do the is simple things.
Going to the gym. A night out with friends.
And a clear calendar.

Thankful: Friday

This guy, right here.
The one who asked me to marry him.
Thanks to a computer glitch his getting home to me was delayed a day.
A good reminder for me I've how much I love him.

Thankful: Thursday

I am grateful for a little time to reflect.
With my elder son home sick all week, and the husband out of town for work, I've had nothing but time for thinking the deep thoughts.
Time to recharge and regroup.

Thankful: Wednesday

My neighborhood.
Rather, the people in it.
Friends and family.
Zack has been sick all week, with Ken stuck working, and they have walked Nate to and from school, brought Jello and saltines and Tylenol when I couldn't get out of the house, sat with one kid while I took the other to the doc, and even brought home schoolwork without us even asking.
This is what it's like to be part of a community. I'd be sunk without them.

Thankful: Tuesday

For this guy.
Even when he's sick.

Monday, November 12, 2012

Thankful: Monday

I love this little guy.
I love being his mom.

Sunday, November 11, 2012

I spent a morning with my guy Nathan, at Tiger Day. It was fun just being his mom and not den leader for a change.

I comforted Zack who is sick today, bringing Jello and saltines and 7-up.

I got a little reading in and picked up Chinese for dinner.

I spent today getting my yard in order; transporting compost is interesting. I made dirt.

I reflected on a troubling issue: a slight to me, an offhand remark from someone I don't really even like. "Don't you ever wonder what she does all day?" He once asked my husband, as he stood in my kitchen, eating food I'd prepared. I pondered this today as I did the hard work of shoveling. I make dirt, I thought. I grow things, I'm growing boys here too. I'm mopping and washing and cleansing and doing. I'm learning and listening and praying. I'm cooking and baking and making. What am I not doing? The making of a good, sturdy home is serious business. It involves so much more than the physical home. It's casting our nets and being a help to others. It's cultivating a community around us, like rich soil, for us all to grow in. It's making my little corner of the planet a little nicer, a little prettier, a little more peaceful. I've learned that good things come from nourishing soil.
