A little Wordsworth for your Friday

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. --Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreath├Ęd horn.

---William Wordsworth 1802

This sums up a lot for me lately.

The hangout

Our house is becoming the neighborhood hangout after school.
The boys come screeching home, asking if so and so can come for a while.
They mostly play ball in the backyard.
The cooler temps have brought them in.
I'm glad they have nice friends.
I don't really mind at all.

Weekending

Finally a little fun.
After a brief bought of croup we made it outside today.
Mexican at our favorite, Casa, and an evening walk at a state park.
We saw so many deer, leaping in the brush.

A surprise

We woke up this morning to find that the boys had hauled up the Christmas tree from the basement. They were busily trying to put it together, but had the poke upside down and the branches scattered everywhere! It was a fun morning, getting all the decorations out, and Ken made cocoa. A wonderful and thoughtful surprise.

Thankful: Friday

This guy, right here.
The one who asked me to marry him.
Thanks to a computer glitch his getting home to me was delayed a day.
A good reminder for me I've how much I love him.

Thankful: Thursday

I am grateful for a little time to reflect.
With my elder son home sick all week, and the husband out of town for work, I've had nothing but time for thinking the deep thoughts.
Time to recharge and regroup.

Thankful: Wednesday

My neighborhood.
Rather, the people in it.
Friends and family.
Zack has been sick all week, with Ken stuck working, and they have walked Nate to and from school, brought Jello and saltines and Tylenol when I couldn't get out of the house, sat with one kid while I took the other to the doc, and even brought home schoolwork without us even asking.
This is what it's like to be part of a community. I'd be sunk without them.

Weekending

I spent a morning with my guy Nathan, at Tiger Day. It was fun just being his mom and not den leader for a change.

I comforted Zack who is sick today, bringing Jello and saltines and 7-up.

I got a little reading in and picked up Chinese for dinner.

I spent today getting my yard in order; transporting compost is interesting. I made dirt.

I reflected on a troubling issue: a slight to me, an offhand remark from someone I don't really even like. "Don't you ever wonder what she does all day?" He once asked my husband, as he stood in my kitchen, eating food I'd prepared. I pondered this today as I did the hard work of shoveling. I make dirt, I thought. I grow things, I'm growing boys here too. I'm mopping and washing and cleansing and doing. I'm learning and listening and praying. I'm cooking and baking and making. What am I not doing? The making of a good, sturdy home is serious business. It involves so much more than the physical home. It's casting our nets and being a help to others. It's cultivating a community around us, like rich soil, for us all to grow in. It's making my little corner of the planet a little nicer, a little prettier, a little more peaceful. I've learned that good things come from nourishing soil.

The simple things

When much I on my mind I retreat to restoring order in the house.
A clean kitchen. A clean floor.
A cuppa with a good book.
All will be well...my mantra these days.

Weekending

Finally a little peace and rest in the house. We finished a busy Friday (volunteering at school and helping a dear friend move) with a bonfire with the scout pack. My boys were so good and had so much fun doing skits and listening to stories by the fire. The weather all weekend was clear and cool, so the boys were outside with Nathan's new football all weekend. Ken got away for a little guy time with a friend. I actually read a book and napped a lot. We ate a lot if takeout, and drank a little wine. Was totally ready for a restful weekend.
Linking with Amanda.
